The next open space was at a large five-storey Renaissance house, decorated with caricatured statues of scenes from the Garden of Eden.

We passed an old well set on a cobbled street, where we could easily visualise the grime and noise of carts and horses rolling through in times past. It was yet another slightly shabby but rather beautiful village. We followed the banks in the direction of the village, walking through a stone archway under a bridge to reach the tight medieval centre. There was a curious salmon-fishing or capture-and-storage point built into the side of the bridge, trapping them as they navigated the river. It was a dreary, cold day, with little colour or light. A short distance from the aire we saw a bustling trade fair was underway and watched as unimpressed cows were bought and reluctantly loaded into trucks, with three men desperately pushing, pulling and otherwise bullying them. We parked easily in the town’s spacious aire down by the river, conveniently payable overnight but not during daylight hours. The next we planned to go and see, only a few miles away, was Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne. We were even able to buy some delicious local duck confit and foie gras to take back with us.Moving on from overnighting in the Domaine de Chirac’s farm, we continued with our now familiar theme of visiting beautiful French villages. The grounds are beautiful - you really feel like you are in the countryside but are conveniently located a quick 15 minute drive from the center of Perigueux, which has all sorts of great restaurants (the staff gave us some good recommendations). The pool was beautiful and very relaxing (and immaculately clean!) I think it is much more worth the money to stay in a more modest room here than a larger room elsewhere.

We stayed in one of the less expensive rooms on the upper floor, which was beautifully decorated and very recently renovated (I cannot stress this enough - there was absolutely no terrible old red carpeting that makes your feet cringe just walking on it, as in so many other places). The rooms are newly renovated (unlike many chateau hotels in the region) in a tasteful, quintessentially french color scheme of violet, pale green and beige. This place is a true treat with a wonderful staff. I stayed here for a few nights with my boyfriend in 2017 and felt compelled to write a review after looking at all of the other dismal options within this price range for chateau hotels in France. If in the region would certainly stay again. Understandably, with business still picking up there was no daytime menu, or room service, but that wasn’t the end of the world as there are loads of great places to eat within a 20 minute drive. Breakfast was a bit disappointing, I was hoping for lots of fresh fruit and the likes. Wine list was very good and we worked our way through it with great advice from the owner. Food was lovely, all the things I love from the region, wonderfully fresh and interesting combinations. A pretty building, with lovely original features, great modern pool and enough grounds to let you feel you have escaped – oddly no real external views as the property is surrounded by trees. We had a lovely junior suite with everything we could want, only slight downside was the bathroom products were not very good (no bar of soap for example) so we simply bought some nice stuff when out sightseeing. If they weren’t so in charge, I’d probably rate the hotel a three star, as staff always seemed rather clueless, or simply could not be found. This hotel is hands-on run by the owners and that counts for a lot.
